Silent Film & Live Music: Strike | CANCELLED
EVENT IS CANCELLED
In collaboration with Tromsø International Film Festival (TIFF) and Sør-Varanger Film Club, Barents Spektakel presents the iconic silent film Strike (1925) by Russian film pioneer Sergei Eisenstein with live music in the cinema!
The film is based on events that took place in 1903, when factory workers in pre-revolutionary Russia went on strike because of their working conditions, and the authorities responded with extreme brutality. Strike is a treasured piece of cinema history, not only because it is a film that visualised this political struggle, but because it remains an important example of the development of cinematic language, when Eisenstien used cross-cuts of factory scenes together with footage of cattle being slaughtered. Other central motifs of Strike include the conflicting values of collectivism versus the individualism of Western cinema.
The music that will be played alongside the film screening was originally composed collaboratively by Norwegian and Russian musicians during TIFF 2021. In Kirkenes it will be performed by Kohib (aka. Øivind A. Sjøvoll) and Kristian Svalestad Olstad as part of Sør Varanger Film Club’s Monday Programme.
